Hanging Lake
Hanging Lake is one of Colorado’s most iconic hikes. The trail is short but steep, climbing about 1,000 feet in 1.2 miles, so bring plenty of water and pace yourself. The turquoise lake and waterfall at the end are absolutely magical, and worth every step. Families can manage it with a good pace, though little legs might need a hand on the steeper switchbacks.
Pro tip: Reserve your permit online in advance—the trail is very popular! And check the weather; the trail gets slippery when wet.
Maroon Bells Scenic Loop
Near Aspen, the Maroon Bells Scenic Loop is a flat, easy trail with some of Colorado’s most stunning alpine scenery. The loop passes by Maroon Lake and offers incredible views of the jagged Maroon Bells peaks.
Perfect for families and photographers alike, the trail is great for wildlife spotting and picnicking by the water. Early morning is the best time to avoid crowds and catch the reflection of the peaks on the lake.
Garden of the Gods – Perkins Central Garden Trail
This easy, paved trail in Colorado Springs is perfect for kids and beginners. Towering red rock formations create a natural playground and make it a magical outdoor classroom. There’s plenty of shade along the trail and free parking nearby.
Bonus: This trail is stroller-friendly and has easy access to picnic areas. A perfect spot for families looking for a short, scenic hike.
Mount Sanitas Loop
In Boulder, the Mount Sanitas Loop is a moderate trail with rocky sections and some steep inclines. It offers panoramic views of Boulder and the Flatirons, making the effort well worth it.
Little hikers might need a hand on the rocks, but older kids and adults will love the challenge. Start early to beat the crowds and catch the morning sun.
Royal Arch Trail
Also in Boulder, this moderate hike climbs to a stunning natural arch. The final stretch is steep but incredibly rewarding.
Families with older kids who enjoy a bit of a challenge will find this hike perfect. Don’t forget water, snacks, and sunscreen, as there’s limited shade along the trail.
Alberta Falls
Located in Rocky Mountain National Park, this short, easy trail is ideal for families and beginner hikers. The trail leads to a breathtaking waterfall surrounded by dense forest.
Bring a camera—the falls are particularly stunning in summer and early fall. The trail is very popular, so try early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.

Lost Lake Trail

St. Mary’s Glacier

Ice Lakes Trail

Royal Arch / Mesa Trail Combo
For a longer day, combine trails around Boulder to reach Royal Arch and nearby mesas. Varied terrain, amazing rock formations, and moderate difficulty make it a perfect family adventure.

Red Rocks Trail
Near Morrison, the Red Rocks Trail offers a moderate hike through red sandstone formations. The trail is ideal for families wanting a mix of scenery and exercise.

Brainard Lake Loop
